Teaching Interests

The focus of my teaching throughout my academic career has involved preparing students and post graduate residents and fellows to treat patients with psychiatric illnesses.  The specific focus has been to improve outcomes in patients with psychiatric illnesses.  In the latter years of my teaching career I incorporated pharmacogenomics of patients with psychiatric illness.  I have been very passionate about these topics having provided lectures outside of my colleges in local, regional and national forums. I have been a Board Certified Psychiatric Pharmacist (BCPP) since the inception of the specialty in 1996.

Scholarly Interests

My research initially focused on ways to improved outcomes in patients with psychiatric illnesses by limiting the burden on these patients by decreasing side effects and improving effectiveness.  This included pharmacokinetic studies to investigate the effects of drug-drug interactions.  I have also published research investigating genetic mutations in the receptors for neurotransmitters in the hopes of learning why some patients respond to certain medications and others do not.  This also led to the investigation of how intra and extra cellular proteins such as the efflux pump P-glycoprotein (P-gp) and breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP) can affect how a patient responds to various medications.
