Dr. Caballero’s appointment follows a national search, and he will assume his new role on February 6. “I am excited to join a group of individuals whose focus is geared into developing pharmacy students who exemplify collegiality, professionalism, and compassion,” Caballero said.

A native of South Florida, Dr. Caballero joins LU after serving on the faculty of Nova Southeastern University (NSU) College of Pharmacy for the last decade. He began his academic career at the University of Texas-Pan American campus in 2004.

Dr. Caballero’s current research is focused on assessing how chronic diseases affect cognitive function and the impact on medication adherence. He has published over 35 peer reviewed publications and over 10 book chapters. He has secured internal and external funding, including federal funding to develop computerized applications to assist pharmacists in promoting adherence in Hispanics with type 2 diabetes.

“I have known Dr. Caballero for more than twelve years and have followed the impressive growth of his career in teaching, research, service and leadership.  I could not be happier with his acceptance of this position.  I believe his commitment and vision will allow him to build his Department to one of national recognition.” Dr. Gary M. Levin, Dean and Professor of the College of Pharmacy, said in announcing Dr. Caballero’s appointment.

Dr. Caballero graduated from Belen Jesuit Preparatory School in Miami, following which he joined the University of Florida to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. After completing his studies in Gainesville, he moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where he studied at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and earned a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. He completed a psychiatric pharmacy residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and a pharmacotherapy fellowship at The Ohio State University. Dr. Caballero is board certified in psychiatric pharmacy, and most recently became an elected fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy. He has worked extensively with underserved populations, including establishing pharmacy outpatient clinical services, all of which have shaped his philosophy on service learning and social justice. These experiences will complement the core values of the LU College of Pharmacy.
