Miami, FL –  Larkin University College of Pharmacy student, Nelly Ruiz received a student travel award to attend the Florida Society of Clinical Oncology (FALSCO) conference. FALSCO is a member supported state society that focuses on providing education, timely dissemination of pertinent information and general support to the Florida professionals who have chosen the medical discipline of oncology.

On March 31-April 1, 2017 FLASCO hosted their 2017 Spring Session and Annual Meeting & Business of Oncology Summit at the Gaylord Palms Convention Center in Kissimmee, Florida. FLASCO awarded up to 10 Student Travel Awards to pharmacy students who attend FLASCO-recognized, training programs in the state of Florida to attend.  This was an opportunity to observe and connect with present leadership who have a major influence on future training.  On Friday during the Dinner and Program Ms. Ruiz, along with 7 other award recipients, which included students and residents, were recognized by Dr. Michael Diaz, the FLASCO President.  On Saturday, the students were able to sit in on scientific discussions on breast and colorectal cancers, which showcased new research, protocols, and recommendations for practice.

Ms. Ruiz was not only able to listen to these discussions, she was also able to meet pharmacists, pharmacy residents, and other pharmacy students who share the same passion she does; oncology pharmacy.  She was able to ask questions and seek advice on how to move forward in the competitive healthcare field.  She also met various pharmaceutical representatives, specialty pharmacy owners, and large chain representatives. When asked about her experience at FALSCO, Ms. Ruiz replied “this experience provided me with great motivation in moving forward in achieving my goal of providing patient care to oncology patients following the completion of my degree in 2019.
